Figured I'd start a topic on the little things in the movie that weren't obvious.

After my 4th viewing today, I noticed a couple things I didn't see before.

When Jake looks at the old 3D photos of Dr. grace's school you see a photo of a young Neytiri in the group photo.

Colonel Quaritch's camouflage uniform is actually 8-Bit graphic style...all pixelated blocks/etc. The other marines have normal camouflage uniforms though.

There is a framed DreamCatcher in Selfridge's office. I felt this was deliberated snuck onto the set by James Cameron to demonstrate the irony that Selfridge had a traditional Native American decoration (in selfridge's case, an antique since it was framed). Talk about the irony that even though he is reminded daily of the Native U.S.A. Americans he still acts and governs the way he does on Pandora's mining colony.

Norm wasn't giving Jake the cold shoulder in the beginning-middle of the movie because Jake was an ignorant idiot that was reporting to Colonel Quaritch (they all knew he was after Max saw him, Grace even referenced it/implied it being the reason they were relocating to the camp in the floating mountains). He was jealous... VERY jealous. In a couple scenes you could clearly see him with jealous looks on his face towards Jake.... That Norm spent half of his life training and studying to go and work on Pandora and Jake goes there with no training, gets accepted into the Na'Vi, meets an alien woman, etc...







So what did all of you notice after a couple viewings that you didn't notice before in the movie?

Mato'a --- the thing you said was a dreamcatcher: while perusing through An Activist's Survival Guide for avatar, i noticed it mentioned the dealing of na'vi artifacts to ridiculously wealthy people on earth. maybe this is one as well? you should get the book.

And the Na'Vi have retarded big toes - whilst the Avatars' look normal.

Things I noticed:

1. Off and on throughout the movie Neytiri's tail was decorated with a ribbon or leather strap.
2. Jake's nose and forehead was adorned with a tribal symbol or paint when he went to choose his Ikran.
3. Jake playfully grabbed Neytiri's tail as they ran towards the tree of voices.

1. The second time I realized that Neytiri only had one ear gauged. I saw more babies because I was looking for them,lol. I saw the shot of the mother holding her baby as they walked away from the fallen hometree, and I also saw a shot of a couple at the tree of souls who were carrying their dead child and the mother was crying...that was really REALLY sad.

2.Third time I noticed that Tsutey and the others were holding Jake by the braid with a knife to it when they brought him before Etyukan.I noticed the giant family sized hammocks in the background..underground in the scene with the hammocks. I noticed that they were speaking English in a few scenes when they really probably wouldn't (Such as when Neytiri and Jake rejoin the clan after mating and She says "we are mated before Eywa" And Mo'at says "Is this true?" Why would she think to say that in English? She was probably super pissed off.)There was also some debate going on amongst my friends over whether or not at the end of the movie, Norm is standing there in his Avatar body when they are kicking the humans off the planet. I said no because his body died. They said yes there was a guy standing there with human clothes on in a Na'vi body. Of course I was right because I remembered that Jake had said that some humans were allowed to stay and they showed a shot of Norm and Max...I still haven't gotten my 5 bucks. lol.

3. 4th time I began picking up lots more language, and I noticed the giant jellyfish looking flowers at the part where Neytriri tells Jake to go back at the beginning.

I also noticed a lot of what has already been said such as the freaky big toes, and Norm's super jealousy.

Ever since the first time though, I reanalyze what I see and go in the next time with a list of questions in my head I want answered.

When I go see it in IMAX, I will mostly be looking to catch language, especially the mournful song they sing at the Tree of Souls.

Good catch. I noticed that one two. I've got two things to add:

1) It *was* a dream catcher, but it was *empty*! Dreamcatchers normally have a spiderweb-like weaving inside the frame which is supposed to catch nightmares and let only the good dreams through. Seems pretty symbolic that Selfridge has a dreamcatcher framed in his office which is completely stripped of its power to stop nightmares.

2) That kind of dealing of indigenous artifacts is something that happens in real life too, often to the detrement of indigenous peoples. Look up "cultural appropriation". It's a big topic, so you might want to add on "museums" or "collecting".

I seriously have to get my hands on that Field Guide! I want to see just how political Cameron gets about this stuff...

After he shot the arrow he approaches the beast however the arrow is sticking out of it's opposite side as if it were shot at another angle. Another is when Jake tests out his Avatar for the first time and when he bumps into the AMP suit he is almost the same size. However when he fights Quaritch at the end he is a lot smaller than his AMP suit.

He also jumped at the amp suit, he was running, and the amp suit moved. The angle that the show was taken could throw this off, and make it seem as if they are the same size when they truly aren't. Also, when Jake was fighting Quaritch he was bent over while being hammered by the knife, also at a weird angle.

Lastly, if the animals on Pandora are anything like the animals on Earth when they die, they can fall at any angle. He shot it on it's right side, and that's where the arrow was sticking out of.

after the destruction of Hometree, the civilians watching the scene with selfridge in the controlroom are other avatar drivers, and they are very sad.

after Neytiri shoots Quaritch, she crouches over Jakes Avatar, growls and looks at Quaritch, then she tilts her head just a little bit as if to say: "Now topple over and die already"

after Quaritch smashed the window of the mobile Link Unit, you can see Jake fight the effects of Pandoras Atmosphere on the monitor. He gulps for air, while the link is broken and he opens his eyes. Then he concentrates again, and reestablishes the link with his Avatar to resume the fight with Quaritch.

The arrow was on the right side of the Hexapede, the camera angle just made it look otherwise.


That AMP suit was different from the one Quaritch used. The one in the beginning of the movie when Jake is running is probably just for loading/unloading stuff, etc like the one Ripley used in Aliens. While the one Quaritch used was a full combat modified one.

I know this has been discussed a ton in other threads, but during my 5th viewing on Saturday, I noticed yet ANOTHER avatar in that scene - other than the one everyone initially mistook for Norm's - further down the line of humans getting on the shuttle, on the right hand side of the line. How many mystery humans/avatars are there that get to stay behind??

Norm, Max, at least 2 other avatar drivers......

this is kind of dumb but, when Neytiri says "All Na'vi people know this story"
is that a dialogue error?

doesn't Na'vi mean people so wouldn't that be like her saying "all people people know this story" ?

I think saying "Na'vi people" is the same as saying "human people" or "human beings". Idk im just making up excuses to defend the movie lol.

Yeah this is also confirmed in the script, although i was under the impression her sister was older than her. Hence why Neytiri seemed not too keen of making Tsahaylu with Tsu'Tey, because it was originally ment to be her older sister.

I noticed that when they're loading up the humans at the end, banshees are swarming all over the Hell's Gate control tower in the backround

Oh man that's amazing. I never noticed that! I'm definately going to look for that when I go watch it next time. I think it will make the movie that just more powerful for me.

In the battle scene, I noticed that there was a 5 fingered painted hand print on Neytiri's chest! Ol' Jake was having some fun! Lucky man! haha

I noticed the hand print on the first showing. Tsu'tey also has hand shaped symbols on his front and back but they're much larger. I also liked how Neytiri and Jake had war paint resembling the colors on their Ikran and Toruk respectively.
