In a recent interview by the LA Times, James Cameron finally gave us a direct answer on what to expect with the Avatar sequel.
“Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment—a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.”
Cameron says it’s no easy task creating Pandora, but now that they have the materials from the first film, it’ll take faster to complete this time around.
“We’re going to spend a lot of money building this world and all these digital characters and digital plants and trees and mountains and so on, and then once we’ve got it, we’ve got it. It’s not like it’s a practical set that when you build it, you have to tear it down and you’re left with a big pile of lumber out behind the studio. We have all that stuff so we can go again,” he explained…"
"We expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story—not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film".
What does this all mean? That we'll be teased enough in the second film to yearn for a third?
Does this mean that Avatar 2 will take place mostly on Pandora and it's oceans, while giving us glimpses of other planets, and possibly, civilizations in Alpha Centauri A?
We know James Cameron is fond of the ocean and underwater exploration, as evident by his collaboration with Disney to film "Aliens of the deep", and the critically acclaimed movie, "The Abyss".
I have seen James Cameron's "Aliens of the deep" in 2-D. It is very captivating seeing all the wondrous creatures of our ocean's bottom. I can only imagine how magnificent it is for James Cameron and his artists to come up with Pandora's luminescent oceanic creatures, especially in 3-D.
But that's just the glitz of the movie. What about the actual plot?
What would you like to see happen in Avatar 2?
Edit: Avatar 2 is slated for 2014 according to IMDB.com
